Only three days after his birthday do I finally remember to visit Pottermore. There is an ongoing game to get you early admittance to Pottermore - I think you have to be really fast - I don't know what 'time' the new clues go up, but I'd read about it in advance so you know what to do when you find a new clue. There are only four more, one question for each book. They are not going to be difficult, but there is a limited number of registrations, so checking the page at the right time is going to be very important. Let me know if you solve and register!! Jill

Duct and Denim answers for Craft/Technology Week

First, we HAVE the jeans!! We'll have legs, pockets, and pieces to cover for the projects . . . and we have SIX low temp glue guns. Be Careful with them - they may be low temp, but they can still burn!

And we have Duct Tape and directions and patterns for our, erm, let's call them Oriental sandals (they remind me of the ones my kdrama characters put on when they come in the house!)

I have found directions for creating 'green' screens in Movie Maker!! I was only partially successful as the chroma key is actually for 'blue' screens. I'm going to see if I can change it to 'green' . . .

And, remember . . . no SPLAT tonight!!

We are organizing our summer activities: we've got Watercolor 101; Playing with Clay: Building and Throwing; DnD Mystery (I need a better name for that) plus Top Ramen Chef! I'm bringing back Balloon Twisting: to the Next Level. Bubbles are again in our future - they were just too much fun! More crafts: Duct & Denim!!

What I don't have are actual dates for many of the programs - my instructors are still coordinating their summer activities . . . So be sure to sign the 'interested' list at the Reference Desk.

Because of limited time with watercolor and pottery, you will be asked to do a little research and plan your claywork for either hand built or coiled. More information will be coming on both of these.

Hello! This is the latest on what is happening with teen activities at the Library this school season.

First, SPLAT on Wednesdays, from 3 to 4:30, is open to grades 9 through 12 this year. A change! If you came to SPLAT last year, when you were in 7th grade, YOU get to come to SPLAT this year. Just You!

SPLAT STARTS SEPTEMBER 15.

7th and 8th graders: we will have a monthly special program for you! And maybe something more frequently . . .

I will be at Mrs. Rowe's Media Apps class weekly at the McPherson LRC on Wednesdays.

A sundae making party will be held on Tuesday, August 10, at 1 pm, for those RTC members who turned in at least one book review or Creative Challenge. We will draw for the prizes at this time. We held the first Senior SPLAT of the summer on Thursday, June 10. Morgan and Cage got to play a bit with the camcorders. Team Anime Maniacs won What's the Question - Splish SPLAT Sea - or was it the Garden Gnomes who won?? Brownies were DEVOURED. Ed won the drawing, choosing a lovely black cinchpack for his prize. And we played a new game, Quelf, which was great fun!

And Billy is really excited about E3, which takes place all next week.

Because the Middle School will be for sixth, seventh and eighth grades next year, summer activities are changing, too. This summer’s SPLAT-Tuesday is open to any student who will be entering the NEW middle school in the fall!

We're going to work on morphing, using the Fantamorph 30 day free trial - those of you who can't come to SPLAT because of after school activities, let me know what character you want to morph into.

Let's see . . . Savannah is morphing into either Hinata or Sango, Gavin is Inuyasha, again, Ed is Ryuuk (that will be fun!), Matt is Mario, Alex is Princess Peach.

We're going to create a 3D mural to replace the dragon - theme - Splish Splash; and we'll be using the morphs there.

I need design ideas, for the mural and for the T-shirts we need to make!!! (Because we are having our own theme this summer!)

Summer Programming Theme/Name

We've been working on coming up with a name/theme for the Summer Teen Programming here at the library - now, I know, SPLAT means Summer Public Library Activities for Teens already (at least, in the summer) but we like to 'specialize' - we've had "That 70's SPLAT", "SPLAT-alot", to name two from the past . . .

Last year we used the official theme, Express Yourself at the Library, because the t-shirts were cool . . .

The theme is water this year, and the official theme is "Make Waves at the Library" - leaves me cold (and wet!) -

so: I need your ideas . . .

I'm partial to: "Splish-SPLAT" which keeps us 'wet', references a really old Bobby Darin song, yet still keeps SPLAT in the mix.

But we don't have to stay with a water reference at all.

SPLAT of the Gods!

SPLAT of the Gods! Our setting: The small Greek village of Eleftina – on the coast of the sea – about 2500 B.C. Our characters include: Aristagoras, (NPC) a minor nobleman, who has two children: Harmonia, 18, and Myron, 15. He has two guards, Zenophon and Drexik. The innkeeper is Simon and his wife is Clytia. The local blacksmith is Euripedes. Captain of the town guard (of approximately 12 men) is Zeon. Local farmer is Polygnotes. Any other characters are NPCs and controlled by the GM.

After the sporting match at the small area in the village, when the bee-stung bull had to be subdued, the men noticed, over the hills to the northeast of the village, a darkening sky. It didn’t look like a rain storm, it looked like the onset of night rapidly approaching. Euripedes watched the dark grow ever closer very quickly, while the rest of the group noticed that the water was rapidly disappearing from the shore. Aristagoras sent his son Myron to his house on the other side of the village with Zenophon while he and Drexik started toward the inn with Simon. The captain of the town guard commanded his men to build a dam.

Simon’s wife was busy serving a guard of about 10 soldiers. They had a strange accent, and she didn’t recognize any of them, nor their captain. The men were in the main room eating, while ‘someone’ she hadn’t seen had been given a private room down the hallway.

Harmonia was at home overseeing the servants prepare an elaborate meal for the mysterious unnamed guest that her father was entertaining later that day. A servant came to her telling her that there was a woman at the back entrance wanting to talk to her. She saw a woman of indeterminate age, well dressed but with a cloak covering her hair and face. In a quiet voice the woman asked Harmonia for a pomegranate – Harmonia took one from a basket in the cooking area and brought it to the woman. The woman drew close to Harmonia and said quietly, “Prepare to flee.” She turned and left immediately, and Harmonia had no time to ask her what she meant. Harmonia entered the house and went to her room, gathering items she considered essential to an unexpected and precipitous departure.

Meanwhile, there was upset at the inn; one of the unusual soldiers ran into the inn and whispered something in the ear of his captain. The commander hurried down the hallway and entered the private room after briefly knocking on the door. Clytia was walking down the hallway when the door to the private room opened and the captain hurried out. She turned to look at him after he passed and was almost knocked to the floor by . . . nothing! There was nothing in the hall, but it felt like a large man had bumped into her.

Polygnotes watched the receding water intently and soon saw, besides the marooned fish and sea life, large shapes moving towards the shore. He was the first to notice that the figures looked like large men. As they grew closed, he realized that what he took to be helmets of a fish shape were actually the heads of the creatures. While the 10 foot high creatures had the bodies of muscular men, their heads were the silvery gray of fish scales, with large staring round red fish eyes to either side. And, in the gaping fish mouths, hundreds of sharp pointed teeth pushed out in horrible arrays. The beasts carried a triton in one hand and a metal net in the other.

The guard Xenophon glanced down the street that lead to the water and noticed the fish-beasts coming closer and closer. Aristagoras hurried on to the inn, while Drexik and Myron ran to the noble’s home. They met Harmonia at the front preparing a ritual to her god, Apollo, to protect the house from the fish-beast that was bearing down on them from about 50 yards away.

At the inn, the captain and his men hurriedly left their seats and dinners and, forming a protective barrier around . . . nothing! . . . moved away from the inn. Aristagoras and Simon, both coming towards the inn, saw the group running rapidly towards the path to the northwest of the village.

Back at the arena, the town guardsmen were milling about, discussing how to build a dam. And . . .

I've been reading Kristin Cashore's books: I started with her second, Fire. You'll like the monster human, I think. Good story, and very hard to put down. I've started Graceling. Those who love fantasy, romance and violence will enjoy these! AFTER I bring those books and the City of Ember series back, I'll get Leviathan, described as 'steam punk' - haven't a clue what that means, but the cover reminds me of an anime: Last Exile.

This is what you need to get your parent's permission to be in 1 The Halloween Parade and 2 Eshleman's Fruit Farm Haunting.

Both events are Saturday, October 31.

The parade - we have a 'marching group' We are to line up for the parade at South Main Street Elementary School at 2:30. Judging is at 3 pm. Those who are 'working' Jack Skellington must be there so we can show the judges what he'll look like. (If you sign up for this, if you get your parent to give their permission, THEN YOU MUST SHOW UP because it will take 5 PEOPLE to make Jack work!!!)

Eshleman's Fruit Farm Haunting - be at Eshleman's Fruit Farm (out 101 North of Clyde) at 7 pm, dressed in your scariest costume. Bring a flashlight and shoes/boots appropriate for orchard ground. We will 'haunt' the orchard, scaring the people on the hay ride when they go past.

The event ends at 11 pm. I will take home the first 4 people that request that of me - the rest will have to make other arrangements.

You need to turn in to me Wednesday: signed permission from your parent stating that you can participate in one or both. You cannot participate in the Eshleman Haunting without being in the parade.

This must be given to me by 5:30 Wednesday October 21. Thanks!

Okay, so I'm not sticking to the schedule! But I'm nervous about Halloween! And we're started! We've got some good ideas/pictures etc. - should be able to post a picture next week.

Next Wednesday - Death Note Jeopardy - the prize - a highly coveted Death Note card that we plucked from the 13th manga.

We'll continue designing our parade 'costumes', and I'll bring the 'noodles'!

More work on our GURPS, too. Today we watched a bit of Daedelus and Icarus. Sad story. More Gods and Goddesses next week.

And I am thrilled and delighted! New Septimus Heap is now being processed! Syren!!!

Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! You can vote for three books. I hate to admit that I have only read one of the books on the list, Breaking Dawn (gee, wonder if anyone is voting for that????) I've read a lot of teen books this summer, they just weren't published in 2008!

So Go Here and check out the list! You may get ideas for more books to read. I did!

This looks a pretty good example of a design for our henna artist, Jodie Fleming, to use. It was created by SPLAT's artist Hailey A.! Good job, Hailey! Your design doesn't have to be as detailed. Remember, henna tattoos last about two weeks, so if you are going to be in a wedding or getting important pictures taken, watch where you put the tattoo.

The program is just for SPLAT teens. Who's a SPLAT teen? Anyone grades 7th through 12th that shows up!!
